Frequently asked questions
- What does each harmony give me?
- Analogous takes neighbours on the wheel and stays calm and cohesive. Complementary takes the opposite hue for maximum contrast. Triadic and tetradic space three or four hues evenly for a lively, balanced set. Monochromatic keeps one hue and varies its lightness.
- Which one should an interface use?
- Usually monochromatic or analogous for the surfaces, plus one complementary hue reserved for the thing you want people to click. Interfaces get their liveliness from a small amount of contrast in the right place, not from five competing hues.
- Are these accessible?
- A harmony says nothing about contrast — two hues can be perfectly balanced and unreadable on top of each other. Run any pair you plan to put text on through the contrast checker before committing to it.
