Frequently asked questions
- Why can I put AVIF in but not get AVIF out?
- Every current browser can decode AVIF, and none of them can encode it. Offering AVIF as an output would mean silently handing back a PNG with the wrong extension, so it is an input format only.
- Will converting a PNG to JPG lose quality?
- Once, yes — JPEG is lossy, so the re-encode costs a little detail. Transparency is lost as well: JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white before encoding.
- Which format should I pick?
- WebP for anything going on the web — the same quality in a noticeably smaller file, supported by every browser since 2020. JPEG for photos headed into older software. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges or transparency.
- Is there a daily limit or a file-size cap?
- Neither. Nothing is queued on a server, because the conversion runs on your own device — the only ceiling is how much memory your browser will give the page.
