Make an image square
A square is what profile pictures, marketplace listings and Instagram grid posts still expect. Cropping to 1:1 costs you the outer edge of the frame — exactly where a full-length portrait or a wide product shot keeps its subject. Padding the short sides hands the platform the shape it asked for without losing a pixel.

What to expect
On a landscape photo the padding lands top and bottom, on a portrait one left and right. The border is only equal the whole way round if you switch the fit to cropping.
